FLORIDA STATE 5, ALABAMA 2
Things started off pretty well for the Crimson Tide (21-10). Kali Heivilin and Alexis Pupillo both singled in a run each in the 1st inning, but Bama left two on base.
Jocelyn Briski got the start in the circle. The sophomore gave up a leadoff single but cruised through the next nine outs. Then she hit the 4th inning wall. FSU put two runners on base via singles and a double brought them in to tie it at 2-2.
Audrey Vandagriff was stranded at third base in the 2nd inning. Brooke Ellestad was left standing at second base in the 3rd. It was Vandagriff turn again to be stuck in scoring position in the 4th after singling and stealing second. Two Tide runners were left on base in the 5th with one out.
The first ‘Noles batter of the 6th inning singled on a pitch over the middle on an 0-2 count. As he has often done with Briski of late, Coach Patrick Murphy brought a quick hook after that pitch. Alea Johnson relieved. After a walk came a 3-run jack to left center field.
Alea then settled down and pretty easily got three outs, two by way of strikeouts. [Why does it seem these relievers never seem ready to pitch to the first couple of batters when they enter a game and then they look like shutdown pitchers?]
NOTES
- Alabama left 8 runners on base – most in scoring position. Catelyn Riley and Marlie Giles had 3 LOBs each.
- After Dr. Jekyll Alea last weekend, we got Mr. Hyde Alea on Wednesday.
- HOLY WOW! Lauren Johnson got to play! She got the great honor of pinch running for Pupillo in the 5th inning. What a prestigious gesture bestowed upon her by The Gut®.
- No errors for Bama! FSU had two.
- Vandagriff was 2 for 4 with 3 stolen bases. Her swipe total for the season stands at 37.
- The voice of the person doing play-by-play was yuck.
- I am too disgusted and lazy to do the research, but this might be the earliest in a season that Alabama has ever gotten to double-digit defeats. The 2023 team fell 22 times for the most losses in school history since 1999. The Tide has 25 regular season games remaining before the SEC Tournament. Do the math.
