Christian Coleman running for Hoover City Council

Chapel Hill resident Christian Coleman is running for the Hoover City Council in this year’s election. Coleman is undecided on which place to seek and is waiting for current city council members to announce their intentions.

Coleman, 36, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree from the University of New Orleans. He works as a freelance writer while taking care of two elementary-aged girls. Coleman also serves in the Alabama Air National Guard. In 2023 and 2024, he deployed to the Middle East. When he’s not writing or serving, he is restoring a 1985 Chevy El Camino.

“Coleman is running to assist military families, advocate for higher wages for city employees, and increase representation for the distinct areas of Hoover,” his release shared.

As it stands now, the Hoover City Council is composed of seven different councilmembers who all run across the entirety of Hoover. This system means that Hoover voters have to sift through dozens of different candidates to find those who best represent their interests. Choosing between dozens of candidates places a heavy burden on the voters of Hoover. Furthermore, this system can result in representation that is not evenly distributed across distinct areas of Hoover. If Hoover were divided into seven council districts, discrete communities could choose councilmembers who know them best.

In 2024, Hoover city employees received a 1.5 percent cost-of-living adjustment; however, inflation was 2.6 percent. That accounts for a 1.1 percent pay cut for city employees. The employees of the city provide invaluable services that all residents rely on. They deserve a cost-of-living adjustment that keeps pace with inflation.

Lastly, Coleman is running to be a voice for veterans and military families in the city. Military families face unique struggles and someone who has been through those struggles can relate best.

“Coleman seeks to bring a new generation and a new perspective to the Hoover City Council. The council needs to represent the dads of Hoover City Schools, the veterans of our armed forces, and the everyday residents who rely on a paycheck. Christian Coleman will do that,” his release stated.
