Day 4 Of Severe Weather Awareness Week- The Do’s and Don’ts Of Tornado Sheltering

The topic of day 6 of severe weather awareness week is tornado sheltering guidelines. Your best option will always be an underground FEMA rated tornado shelter. But realistically, not everyone can afford them. So your next best option, which is still a very reliable and safe option is basement. If no basement is available, a small windowless room on the lowest floor and in the interior of the building will also offer safe shelter.

But there are also some places you don’t want to be. The bad options include large open rooms like gymnasiums or auditoriums with high ceilings, as well as manufactured homes. But even worse, you never want to be in a mobile home or vehicle, or underneath an overpass during a tornado. These are extremely dangerous and offer no protection. And of course, you never want to be caught outdoors with no shelter at all.
