Nick Derzis announces bid for Hoover mayor, vows strong leadership

Nick Derzis, a veteran law enforcement leader with over four decades of public service, officially declared his candidacy for mayor of Hoover at a press conference Monday. Surrounded by community leaders and supporters, Derzis emphasized his commitment to restoring strong, accountable leadership and ensuring Hoover remains a thriving city.

“For over four decades, I have had the honor of serving Hoover, protecting its residents, and building a culture of excellence in public safety,” Derzis said. “During that time, I’ve seen law enforcement—and our city—change. I have witnessed Hoover grow from a small suburb to one of Alabama’s largest cities.”

Highlighting a need for fresh leadership, Derzis pointed to concerns from local business owners about the city’s direction. “One of my wife’s closest friends, a successful business owner in Hoover, recently told me something that stuck with me: ‘Hoover feels tired.’ And I agree. The energy, momentum, and vision that once defined our city are fading,” he stated.

Derzis outlined key priorities for his campaign, focusing on public safety, education and fiscal responsibility. “Ensuring Hoover’s first responders have the resources they need to protect the community and maintain the city’s reputation as one of the safest in the nation” will be a top priority, he said.

On education, he emphasized collaboration with local schools: “Partnering with school leaders to support Hoover’s schools and ensure students have access to the best educational opportunities in Alabama.”

Derzis also promised financial discipline and transparency in city government. “Ending reckless spending, making every taxpayer dollar count, and bringing openness and accountability back to City Hall” are at the core of his fiscal plan, he noted.

Addressing concerns about public trust in local government, Derzis vowed to make transparency a cornerstone of his administration. “Government should serve the people—not the other way around,” he said. “As mayor, I will work hand-in-hand with the City Council, hold regular town halls, and ensure Hoover’s government operates with full transparency.”
