In a move that many Alabama fans have been hoping for since the end of the 2024 season, Kalen DeBoer has reached an agreement to reunite with his former OC, Ryan Grubb. Alex Scarborough has the story.
How the hire impacts Sheridan is unclear.
Alabama’s offense was inconsistent last season, especially the passing game and quarterback Jalen Milroe, who announced last week that he was entering the NFL draft.
The Crimson Tide ranked 23rd in scoring and 56th in passing yards per game.
Sheridan and DeBoer were together at the Atlanta Falcons game on Sunday to see former Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
The DeBoer-Grubb connection runs deep, starting with Grubb’s time as a position coach on DeBoer’s Sioux Falls staff in the mid-to-late 2000’s.
More recently, Grubb was DeBoer’s offensive coordinator at Washington (2022-23) and Fresno State before that (2020-21).
The 48-year-old Iowa native helped the Huskies offense finish second nationally in passing yards per game and 13th in points per game during the 2023 season, en route to a national championship game appearance.
Grubb was fired after just one season in Seattle and has spurned Alabama twice, including Nick Saban once. He left after announcing himself to boosters last season, ostensibly to stay in the Seattle area and give the NFL a try. That indecision will undoubtedly be a red flag for some.
On the flip side, Steve Sarkisian once spurned Nick Saban for the NFL, then returned to Alabama for a successful run. It will be interesting to see how Grubb impacts the scheme, though with a new quarterback it may be tough to gauge.
