So Long, Stanley: Why Schools Are Banning Stainless Steel Bottles (and What to Buy Instead)

If you told me last year I’d be scouring Amazon for plastic water bottles, I’d have laughed all the way to the checkout line with my kid’s 40 ounce Owala. But here we are — more and more schools are rolling out new rules: No stainless steel water bottles allowed.

Why? Turns out, those clunky, clangy stainless steel bottles have become more than just a noise nuisance. Teachers and principals are tired of the lunchroom sounding like a cowbell concert every time a kid drops their bottle on the tile floor. Plus, there have been incidents of kids using them to smuggle ahem “contraband” or accidentally (or not-so-accidentally) whacking each other in the face while twirling around in the lunch line. Who knew a Stanley could double as a medieval weapon?

So, yes — the days of ice-cold insulated water all day long might feel numbered. But here’s the good news: there are some seriously good plastic and non-steel bottles out there that won’t make your kid feel like they’re stuck with a toddler sippy cup. They’re lightweight, durable, leak-resistant, and probably won’t knock anybody out in the hallway.

My son will be a Senior this year, so this mama has been around the block since well before Stanleys were cool. I’ve rounded up five of the best plastic water bottles your kids won’t mind tossing in their backpack this year — and you won’t mind replacing when they inevitably lose them under the bleachers.
