Craft Beer Base Pyotr I : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
The beer poured out a pitch black colour with a thin amount of tan coloured head. However, the head didn’t have much staying power and collapsed quickly to a thin layer on top.
I was most impressed with the aroma. It was rich, thick, and developed nicely during drinking. Initially, it was of coffee and chocolate, yet it segued into a roasted black malt aroma which remained sweet. Moreover, there was a touch of alcohol present when it warmed up, that wasn’t overpowering, but supportive. Finally, a touch of honey-like aroma was noted in the back but perhaps I had imagined that?
Talk about a full bodied beer! It was thick and viscous throughout drinking – a beer to put hair on your chest! The body began with a deep coffee and chocolate flavour, more dark chocolate than milk. This was followed up with some of a well-rounded black malt flavour with that same touch of alcohol heat sticking around. Combined, all of the flavours blended together well and made it a sipping beer. Finally, a lingering aftertaste of chocolate and coffee finished off the beer nicely.
Craft Beer Base Pyotr I : The Bottom Line
A great example of an imperial stout – definitely pick it up when you find it.
