New Round Of “Reciprocal” Tariffs On The Way, President Says
Yesterday, President Trump signaled that a broad round of tariffs are coming on countries that he believes are taking advantage of the U.S. The tariffs will be tailored to individual countries—including allies like the E.U., Japan, and Korea—by Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick and U.S. trade representative nominee Jamieson Greer with input from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
According to Lutnick, the tariffs could go into effect as soon as April 2, with the nominee stating that he would deliver his tariff recommendations to the president by April 1. Per the New York Times, Trump stated that he was not considering any exemptions or waivers for this round of tariffs. The new levies follow Trump’s move to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, which were announced earlier this month and then delayed for 30 days after those countries agreed to beef up border security.
