Moët Hennessy Sales Dip In Q1, But Hennessy’s U.S. Depletions Return To Growth
Moët Hennessy saw first-quarter sales slip 9% organically to €1.3 billion ($1.5b) in the three months through March, as the company cited “ongoing normalization of demand” as impacting its results. The French luxury drinks group also acknowledged “uncertainty around tariff policies.” Earlier this year Moët Hennessy posted full-year 2024 sales down 8% organically to €5.9 billion ($6.2b).
Moët Hennessy’s Champagne stable—boasting such brands as Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, Dom Perignon, Ruinart, and others—was down only 1% to €676 million ($766m) in the first three months of this year. But the Cognac & Spirits unit led by Hennessy fell 17% to €629 million ($713m), weighed down by weaker demand for Cognac in the U.S. and China.
While shipments continue to struggle, Moët Hennessy has seen better uptake in depletion terms in the U.S. lately, with the Hennessy brand returning to growth last year, up 2% to 3.2 million cases, according to Impact Databank. On the wine side, Chateau d’Esclans, Chandon, The Beach by Whispering Angel, and Cloudy Bay all saw U.S. depletions climb in 2024.
Within the portfolio during the first quarter, Moët & Chandon debuted a global limited-edition bubbly in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, and the Provence rosé stable of wines including Chateau d’Esclans “experienced a good start to the year,” according to the company. In spirits, the Glenmorangie single malt Scotch whisky benefited from the debut of a new Triple Cask Reserve offering, as well as a fresh ad campaign starring Harrison Ford.—Daniel Marsteller
