Game of Thrones actor Rory McCann has invested in a new Scottish whisky brand that aims to make scotch more accessible to everyday drinkers. Slanj, launched by brothers Brian and Craig Halley alongside Stuart Montgomerie, debuts with a £47 blended whisky that eschews traditional formality.
The venture represents the culmination of a decade-long dream for the founders, who previously established Slanj Kilts. They secured the whisky brand name nearly 10 years ago, drawing inspiration from the Scottish toast “slàinte,” meaning “health.”
Rory McCann Champions Slanj’s No-Fuss Approach
McCann, who portrayed Sandor “The Hound” Clegane in HBO’s hit series, has taken an active role in the brand’s development. The Scottish actor participated in the final blend selection process and serves as a key investor.
“I’ve always loved whisky, but Slanj hits different,” McCann said. “It’s smooth, no smoke, no fuss – just a bold, easy-going dram anyone can enjoy. I’m proud to back a whisky that’s pure Scottish spirit, without the rules. It’s the ultimate Scottish toast to the world.”
The inaugural release combines 70% Speyside single malt aged in sherry casks with 30% Highland single malt matured in bourbon casks. Douglas Laing & Co, an independent blender and bottler, partnered with the team to develop the whisky. The blend is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered, and maintains its natural color.
Slanj Targets Modern Whisky Drinkers
The brand positions itself as a departure from traditional scotch whisky conventions while maintaining quality standards. Brian Halley emphasized this philosophy in the company’s approach.
“Scotch doesn’t need to be sacred to be exceptional,” Halley said. “We’ve always loved the craft, but we wanted to create something that felt less like a ritual and more like a moment. Something people could enjoy instinctively, without second-guessing how to drink it.”
The whisky delivers fruit notes with subtle sweetness and gentle spice, deliberately avoiding smoky characteristics. Whisky writer Charles MacLean, co-founder of the Maclean Foundation, has endorsed the blend, calling it “moreish.”
Slanj launches initially in the UK market with plans for international expansion. Douglas Laing has committed to providing sustainable malt supplies for future releases. The team plans to introduce limited editions and special releases to complement the core range.
The brand emerges at a time when whisky producers increasingly seek to attract younger consumers and casual drinkers who may find traditional scotch intimidating. By combining celebrity backing with an approachable marketing message, Slanj aims to bridge the gap between whisky tradition and modern drinking culture.
