Most brands launch with a single spirit and build from there. Not Lasso Motel. They’re launching with an astonishing 13 different whiskies, including 9 different unique finishes. And while the brand has nothing to do with the great Ted Lasso, I can’t help of his wise words, “taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse. If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.”
I don’t know founder Devin Odell, but I can’t imagine he’s comfortable right now. Don’t get me wrong; he’s not new to the spirits game. Lasso Motel actually marks the 10th addition to his Dynasty Spirits portfolio. But to go to market with such a broad offering before the brand has gained traction takes another level of confidence.
The meat of the Lasso Motel lineup is straight bourbon whiskey finished in 9 different ways. The spirit itself comes from the Green River Distillery in Kentucky and is bottled at 100-proof. Each is $70.
- Sherry – PX sherry casks of southwestern Spain
- Rose – rosé casks from France
- Port – Tawny port casks from Portugal
- Tokaji – wine casks from Hungary
- Naranja – wine casks from southern Spain
- Cognac – casks from France
- Mizunara – casks from Japan
- Amburana – casks from Brazil
- Le Stave – finished with French oak stave
If finished whiskey isn’t your cup of tea, they also offer more traditional options, including an 18-year option that just won Best in Show at the York World Spirits Competition.
- 4-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey (Green River), 100-proof, $45
- 8-Year Kentucky Straight Whiskey (Barton), 100-proof, $75
- 10-Year Single Barrel Rye (MGP), cask strength, $90
- 18-Year American Straight Whiskey (MGP), 121-proof, $130
Admittedly, I haven’t tried all of the offerings yet. The finished whiskeys I have sampled, though, have been delicious. They’re all unique in their own right, and it’s very interesting to see how much difference the barrel makes.
I hope for everyone else’s sake they opt to put out a 10-pack of 100ml bottles so people can taste through the whole array without breaking the bank. It’d easily be the whiskey gift of the year.
For now, you can pick it up in stores if you’re in Texas or Florida or online through Seelbachs.
