Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds : Background
Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds – and breathe out – is a 6.5% saison from Mangosteen Brewing Lab, based in Hokuto, Yamanashi. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. The beer is brewed with rye malt and also contains cardamon. As for the name, well apparently the head brewer had a supposed experience with a UFO and felt it was apt to name the beer after that experience.

Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Once I had gotten over the length of the name of this beer – which I will try to use sparingly for brevity’s sake – I was surprised about how light it had turned out. With the addition of rye, I was expecting something a bit darker, a bit redder, but not a light golden hazy colour. The head was minimal, with just a few bubbles on top that soon faded away.
With the addition of rye though, I was ready for the spiciness that was due to come out of the glass – and I was right. Though it was muted in comparison to other rye-cotaining beers, the aroma it brought was noticeable when the beer was chilled. As Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds warmed up however, some stronger spicy, peppery notes eminated from the glass, alongside a light peachy phenolic aroma from the yeast. Though this beer had cardamon added to it as well, it wasn’t a potent aroma, but more one that coexisted in the moment – if you went looking for it, you could find it, but it wasn’t overtly pronounced.
In the body, I was looking for something dry and bold, for which this beer ticked both boxes. The spicy, peppery notes from the rye; the peachy phenols from the yeast, and a crackery sweet bite from the malts aligned up well with one another, making this a complex tasting beer, but a plesant one at that. At 6.5%, the alcohol wasn’t noticeable though as the beer warmed up, there was a touch of heat to it.
Mangosteen I Saw Five Blue Windows Between The Clouds : The Bottom Line
A quirky little number here – definitely one for those looking for something out of the box.
