Minoh Rice Bock : Background
Minoh Rice Bock is an 8% weizenbock from Minoh Beer, based out of Minoh, in Osaka. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup. However, it’s a seasonal beer so it may have sold out by the time this review is out. It is brewed with rice malt alongside koji, with Motueka hops.

Minoh Rice Bock : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
The beer poured out a muted orange colour with a large frothy head on top that left thick streaks during drinking.
From the beginning, the beer had a strong malt aroma of caramel and a toasted aroma. Additionally, the yeast had produced a light phenolic aroma, with a aroma of banana and light spiciness. Furthermore, as it warmed up, it had a light sake-like quality underlying the malt and yeast aromas. For those wondering about the Motueka hops, well there wasn’t any distinct aroma from them.
Having let the beer warm up for 10 minutes, the body was a rich caramel and banana flavour. The malt flavour paired off nicely with the phenols from the yeast. In spite of being 8%, the alcohol heat was restrained and as such, felt lacking with the style. I would have liked some more to have come through but I suspect the koji might have something to do with that.
Minoh Rice Bock : The Bottom Line
It’s not a great representation of what a weizenbock should be. However, it’s a decent drinking beer and I wouldn’t be disappointed if I got this in a bar.
