Nara Sweet Pain – BeerTengoku

Nara Sweet Pain : Background

Nara Sweet Pain is 6% milk stout from Nara Brewing Company, based in Nara, Japan. It is available in cans and on draught. However, this canned version has nitrogen instead of carbon dixoide. Nara Brewing Company used Maris Otter, Munich Malt Type1, Melanoidin Malt, Caraaroma, Carafa Type 2, Chocolate Wheat Malt in the grain bill. For hops, they used Merkur and Willamette, and threw in some lactose for good measure.

Nara Sweet Pain : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

The beer poured out a dark brown, verging on black, though the head looked different. Lots of small tan bubbles slowly settling to form a finger’s worth of head. It was akin to watching a pint of Guinness settle. That same head laid on top of the beer throughout drinking.

For the aroma, it began with a light, well-balanced chocolate and coffee aroma, with a touch of roast malt. Not enough to be acrid or off putting, but just enough to let you know about it. It also had a smooth, silky creamy aroma from the lactose, and a touch of roasted nuts.

Finally, the body was as smooth as the aroma. The body flittered between chocolate, coffee, and that roasted nut flavour, against a creamy body. It was an easy drinking beer, with non of the alcohol present during drinking. In fact, it was so smooth, I didn’t believe it was 6%. The beer’s flavours lingered on into the aftertaste though I would have liked a more robust body.

The Bottom Line

Nara Sweet Pain is a delicious beer that could do with a touch more body.
