Passific Lucky Number #300 – BeerTengoku

Passific Lucky Number #300 : Background

Passific Lucky Number #300 is an imperial stout from Passific Brewing, based in Chigasaki, Kanagawa. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though it’s only around for a limited time. As the number suggests, like Passific Lucky Number #100, this beer was brewed in celebration of their 300th beer brewed. Instead of using water to spray over the malt during the mashing process, Passific Brewing used wort with the idea of the beer having been passed through 300 kg of malt.

How is this done you ask? Well they made wort with 150 kg of malt in the same way as in normal brewing. Normally, this will produce beer with about 5% alcohol. Once the go to that point, they reset the kettle and used 150 kg of malt and the wort made earlier to went through the process of saccharification and filtration again.

Passific Lucky Number #300 : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Passific Lucky Number #300 poured out a thick, gloppy pitch black colour with a thick tan head on top. That head, consisting of small to medium bubbles, faded to an oil slick-like head on top, though some lacing was present down the glass’ edge.

With so much malt going into the making of Passific Lucky Number #300, it was always going to be thick on the nose. With heavy handed notes of chocolate and coffee, and a slight burnt caramel edge as it warmed up, it was clearly an imperial stout. It’s bold and punchy, yet, funnily enough, also delicate and light as the aromas were balanced off one another quite well. I would love to have said this beer was more complex than that, but it wasn’t really. Hop wise – there was nothing really of note in the beer.

This beer is styled as a spartan imperial stout, so named after the strength of spartan warriors, but let’s be honest – that’s just PR blurb. From the first to the last sip, Passific Lucky Number #300 is your classic imperial stout. Lashings of dark chocolate and roasted coffee, with a tinge of roasted black malt, were evident from the get-go, and with an edge of booziness in the body, it was a touch hot on the palate, yet in a good way. That’s how it stayed during drinking, without ever getting more complex than that.

Passific Lucky Number #300 : The Bottom Line

A decent imperial stout, but as a celebratory beer? Nothing special.
