The History of Hedonism
Compass Box Hedonism was first released in 2000 and marked the debut bottling from John Glaser’s then-new whisky company, Compass Box. It was a bold statement, setting the tone for the brand’s innovative approach to blending.
At the time, grain whisky was largely overlooked, typically used as a supporting component in blends rather than showcased on its own. Hedonism changed that narrative, demonstrating that well-aged grain whisky—sourced from distilleries such as Girvan, Port Dundas, and Cameronbridge—could be complex, luxurious, and deserving of the spotlight. The whisky’s rich, creamy character, with notes of vanilla, coconut, and toffee, appealed to both whisky enthusiasts and newcomers.
The success of Hedonism helped establish Compass Box’s reputation for creativity and craftsmanship, reinforcing its focus on transparency and quality in blending. The reception was strong enough that it transitioned into an annual release in 2024.
While Compass Box has since released various limited editions under the Hedonism banner (such as Hedonism Maximus, Hedonism Quindecimus, and Hedonism Felicitas), the original remains a flagship whisky, emblematic of the brand’s pioneering spirit in the world of modern whisky blending.
Compass Box Hedonism 2025 is a stunning blend of six grain scotch whiskies aged between 15 and 20 years.
