The Port Askaig range is collection of Islay single malts bottled by independent bottler, Elixir Distillers. Each Port Askaig expression a different style of Islay’s whisky style, ranging from light and fresh to intensely peaty, each supplied by a different distillery. The range’s entry expression, the Port Askaig 8 Year Old is bottled at 45.8% ABV.
Charcoal, peat smoke, some salty crisps, and smoked ham. There’s a slight green herbaceous note, and a hint of lemon citrus.
Opens with some creamy sweetness, with honey and vanilla. The sweetness gives way to soft, slightly earthy peat. There’s a little salt and pepper spice.
Medium, light smoke lingers with lemon juice. Some sea salt and a little brine.
Although Elixir Distillers does not disclose which Islay distillery supplied the malt for the Port Askaig 8 Year Old expression, I’d personally guess its Caol Ila.
Easy drinking, affordable, and approachable at 45.8% ABV the Port Askaig 8 Year Old is great alternative introduction to Islay whisky.

Bourbon Review: Wild Turkey 81 Proof

As far as introducing yourself to Wild Turkey, this is a great start. For me, Wild Turkey has always been about big ABVs, but it is also manageable on the palate.
