Sydney’s Grumpy Baker unveils its 12th location in Potts point with a twist. More than just a bakery, the new Macleay Street venue has introduced a bar and Middle Eastern-inspired dinner menu, expanding the brand’s offerings beyond their famous baked goods.
Taking over from the former Macleay Street Bistro, the venue has been redesigned by co-founder Michael Cthurmer, his wife Deborah, and their daughter Lily. The space offers a cosy yet modern aesthetic, featuring textured walls, tan leather seating, handmade tiles, and neutral tones.
“This venue lets us take the food I grew up with and share it in a way that feels true to what we do,” Michael Cthurmer said.
By day, patrons can expect an expanded café menu, with dishes like Shakshuka, Challah French Toast, and Chicken Schnitzel on house-baked challah.
As evening falls, the space shifts into a neighbourhood bar, serving up a share-style menu inspired by Middle Eastern flavours. The menu includes grilled meats, Moroccan fish, and roasted eggplant with tahini.
The drinks menu will be bringing forth the same Middle Eastern inspired palate, with twists on classic cocktails, such as the rosewater negroni, sumac spritz and Israeli-style espresso martini, all designed to complement the rustic flavours of the share plates.
Beyond cocktails a boutique wine list has been carefully curated by Deborah Cthurmer, with a highlight on small Australian producers. The selection leans into crisp whites, bold reds, and roses, with organic and biodynamic options, and a few handpicked international labels that blend in with the venues new late-night approach.
