York Gin has launched the UK’s first completely recycled gin bottle.
The bottle – made from 100% recycled glass – is made by Yorkshire manufacturer Verallia for York Gin.
The bottles are completely made with glass from previously-used bottles, windscreens and other glass products.
The pre-used glass is crushed, melted and then re-cast in the unique York Gin bottle shape, bevelled with a design of the city walls.
The glass is known as Vista and is composed of 100% PCR – post-consumer recycled glass. This is the first time that UK-made 100% recycled glass has been used for a gin bottle.
Verallia say they are excited and proud of the new bottles.
The York Gin bottles have passed every test for robustness and strength – with flying colours.
Nolan Kane from Verallia said: “Creating 100% PCR bottles in the UK is a positive step forward for our industry and Verallia’s commitment to sustainability. Verallia has been making bottles in Yorkshire for over 150 years, and collaborating with York Gin for this UK first is an exciting step forward.”
The bottles’ sustainability credentials are bolstered by travelling only 27 miles from Verallia’s Knottingley factory to the York Gin distillery.
Using 100% recycled glass does affect the colour of the glass slightly – giving it a blue-ish tint. York Gin director Natalie Hall says this is a plus point.
‘As York’s first legal distillery, we make spirits inspired by our beautiful city’s 2000 years of history. Using glass that has had previous lives gives our bottles a unique character and history.
Natalie added: ‘York Gin has always been committed to being as sustainable as we possibly can be – while maintaining the highest possible standards.
‘And we always buy local – when local provides the best. With this new 100% recycled bottle, sustainability and locally-made collide beautifully. We’re immensely proud to be working with Verallia on this recycled glass project. Our motto is ‘History in the Tasting’ but this is the future of bottles!’
York Gin’s other sustainability credentials include:
– a refill station in their central York shop which allows customers to fill any spirits bottle with their choice of York Gin
– a refill scheme with trade customers using jerry cans of York Gin – and filling their existing bottles
– driving an electric van
– ensuring none of their waste ends up in landfill
– using a green energy tariff for their distillery and shop
– using sustainable Yorkshire printers, Label Makers for their bottle labels
Natalie said: ‘We’re so proud that Verallia chose York Gin for this UK first.
‘It’s a testament to York Gin’s commitment to sustainability that they have chosen us to be their very partner on this brilliant project.’
