INHIBITION in the Alexander Technique is the choice when you’re about to begin a physical activity of choosing to initiate the activity with great posture, great technique, and without excess tension.
What is emotional inhibition? Emotional inhibition is not specific to the Alexander Technique, which is only about changing how you do something physical in everyday or specialized activities. This means ALL physical activities.
I’ve noticed for years when someone pushes my buttons, or for whatever reason I become very afraid or angry or depressed, that the emotion is overwhelming and incapacitating.
What do I mean?
Once I am angered or experience extreme fear or depression for whatever reason, I feel incapable of inhibiting the feeling. You may ask should I inhibit the feeling, and what does inhibiting the feeling mean?
IT MEANS AS AN ACT INHIBITION, I CHOOSE TO RELEASE THE ANGER OR FEAR OR DESPAIR.
In choosing to release the feeling, am I suppressing what I should be feeling and let it run it course.
Should I let it run its course?
If I “lose it” based on conditioning I’ve experienced in the past that was an attack on me, and if I understand that my knee jerk emotional response here and now is outdated, not current, then it seems to me inhibiting anger and fear and depression would be an act of self love bringing me into the real here and now.
SO I WOULDN’T BE SUPPRESSING MY FEELINGS, BURYING INTOLERABLE FEELINGS PUSHING THEM INTO THE SUBCONSCIOUS.
But there is another problem with being able to emotionally inhibit. When something triggers extreme anger or fear or depression in me, I feel powerless to inhibit my emotion and physical response to whatever.
Am I powerless to quickly return to emotional peace?
NO!
What has to happen for me not to cave into destructive outdated beliefs about myself that have nothing to do with my present reality and weren’t ever true in my past?
For most of my life whenever a self-destructive feeling kicked in, I chose to believe I could do nothing to stop it, release it, quickly move on from it.
I BELIEVED I WAS HELPLESS TO MY CORE TO STOP BEING OVERWHELMED BY ATTACKS ON MY SELF WORTH.
Is this true? NO! It is true as long as I choose to believe it is true. It has been true to me, to whom I believed I was for a very long time.
THE LONGER WE BELIEVE A LIE ABOUT OURSELVES, THE TRUER AND MORE POWERFUL THE LIE BECOMES, BECAUSE WE HAD TO BURY THE LIE TO SURVIVE. A LIE THAT CAUSES US TO HATE OURSELVES HAS TO BE BURIED, BECAUSE IF SELF-HATRED BECOMES TRULY CONSCIOUS AND NOT CHALLENGED WE CAN’T LIVE WITH IT. IT MAY CAUSE US TO CHOOSE TO DIE.
If lies you believed about yourself become conscious enough, which means you have become aware enough they aren’t true, but still overwhelm you, then being conscious enough and using the Alexander Technique tool of INHIBITION may free you enough so you can live fearlessly.
