Hot & Crabby Salad

In Chinese medicine, "Kidney yin deficiency" (or low estrogen) is a common diagnosis, especially in peri/menopausal women with symptoms of heat and dryness and in patients who have been through many years of mental and/or physical overwork (aka: adrenal fatigue). This recipe is based on the principles of Chinese food therapy, using foods that are cooling and moistening to treat patients with hot and dry conditions, commonly experienced by women as their hormones fluctuate or decline. If you are in perimenopause or menopause and feeling "hot and crabby", this salad is for you!!

Symptoms of Kidney yin deficiency include: hot flashes, night sweats, dizziness, low-pitched ringing in the ears and/or hearing loss, adrenal hyperactivity, lower back ache, achy bones, dry skin or dry throat at night, vaginal dryness, light sleep with frequent waking, flushed cheeks, feeling of heat in the hands/feet/chest, and/or memory loss.

Although I generally recommend cooked foods over raw, this salad can be enjoyed in moderation to help generate more fluids and help to cool you down. Eat this on its own as a quick and easy lunch by preparing the night before.

Ingredients:

  • 2 4.25 oz. cans wild-caught crabmeat, rinsed and drained

  • 1/4 cup avocado oil mayo

  • juice of ½ lemon

  • ½ cup shredded carrots

  • 1 celery stalk, finely chopped

  • 2 cups cabbage or coleslaw mix

  • 4 TBSP rice wine vinegar

  • 1 TBSP coconut aminos

  • 1 tsp honey

  • sprinkle of black sesame seeds (garnish)

  • pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the crab, cabbage, celery, and carrots.

  2. In a small bowl, make dressing by combining, lemon juice, avocado mayonnaise, coconut aminos, rice wine vinegar, and honey. Whisk until smooth.

  3. Add the dressing into the crab mixture and mix well. Serve into bowls and top with black sesame seeds.

  4. Chill for 1 hour or overnight for best flavor.
