Ben Neill and Rupert Sheldrake Collaborate on Ambient Piece Morphic Resonance (Spectral Mix)

Morphing Resonance (Spectral Mix) is the ambient reworking of the original Morphic Resonance, a collaborative composition between experimental trumpeter and composer Ben Neill and British biologist and writer Dr. Rupert Sheldrake. This version shifts the focus toward immersive textures, processed timbres, and spacious harmonic development, drawing on themes of connectivity and resonance explored in Sheldrake’s theoretical work.

The track opens with slowly emerging layers of brass, unfolding over time into shimmering ambient drones and electronically manipulated textures. Using live sampling from Neill’s custom-built Mutantrumpet, processed vocal elements, and spatial effects, the mix develops organically. Ambient elements pan across the stereo field, creating a sense of movement and evolving space, while harmonic fragments rise and fade in a subtle rhythmic cycle.

The composition is built from the phrase “Morphic Resonance,” translated into music using custom text-to-sound software. These materials are then shaped live using Neill’s Mutantrumpet, a unique hybrid instrument that merges trumpet performance with real-time electronic manipulation. The resulting textures reflect Sheldrake’s concept of morphic fields—ideas about interconnected biological and psychic systems—by layering shifting tonal material that continuously reconfigures itself.

Ben Neill is known for integrating acoustic and electronic music through his self-designed Mutantrumpet. With a background in experimental composition and collaborations spanning from La Monte Young to DJ Spooky, his current project, Amalgam Sphere, uses AI-based generative processes alongside improvisation and live performance.

Rupert Sheldrake is widely recognised for his work on morphic resonance and consciousness studies, which have influenced generations of thinkers in the psychedelic and scientific communities. His sampled voice, processed and embedded into the composition, becomes a textural and conceptual element within the track.

Morphic Resonance (Spectral Mix) is part of a series of tracks that blend experimental sound design, live performance, and conceptual frameworks. It’s a detailed and immersive listen, offering a carefully structured exploration of sound, space, and transformation.
