Bassist, composer, & improvisor Lisa Mezzacappa and percussionist Jason Levis perform in a house concert in Berkeley. Their collaboration, “duo B.”, will present their work “Incomplete, Open”, a flexible suite of compositions inspired by the drawings of Sol LeWitt. Self-described as “a musical think-tank of grand schemes and impossible scenarios,” the ensemble has spent nearly 20 years developing and refining its singular approach to improvisation and composition. Their work involves cross-disciplinary collaborations with film; partnerships with improvising instrumentalists both locally and internationally; and deep dives into the improvised-composed musical worlds of masters Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, and others.

Eco-composer Cheryl E. Leonard on Thin Ice: From Antarctic icebergs to Europe’s largest glacier to frozen lakes in Yosemite National Park, voices of melting ice are showcased in a musical performance by Cheryl E. Leonard. Field recordings interweave with sounds played live on rocks, shells, driftwood, penguin bones, water, and kelp in compositions about our transforming polar and alpine regions. Rooted in her personal explorations and informed by scientific research, Leonard’s music shares sonic wonders and stories of change from Earth’s icy realms. Cheryl E. Leonard is a composer, performer, field recordist and instrument builder whose works investigate natural sites and ecosystems and human relationships with them. She uses microphones and amplification to explore sonic intricacies, highlighting unusual voices and soundscapes while addressing environmental issues.
