Furthermore was the first solo album from Bryan Hilyard, and falls squarely into the realm of darker, outer-space ambient music. Deep drones and soft washes of synth are punctuated with waves of static across five mid-length tracks. These components evoke visions of drifting through airlocks in mysterious solar systems. The tones fall short of being bright, yet are not overtly menacing.
Hilyard takes on a documentarian’s role, producing a cinematic take on both the science and the science fiction. The droning can be monolithic but brief foreground motifs and processed sounds break up their uniformity. As a result, the pieces flirt with being pastoral but maintain a sense of melancholy.
Furthermore was recorded in 2018 but holds up as an excellent representative of its loose genre. Highly recommended.
