Innate Editions debuts with reissue of Connective Zone’s 2001 “Palm Palm”

Innate Editions is a new sublabel of Owain K’s Innate, resurfacing a classic you didn’t know you were missing until you heard it again. Connective Zone’s Palm Palm was released in 2001 on Unexplored Beats and appreciation for it has grown over time (and price: one of the best Discogs comments ever notes that so many users referring to this record as “underrated and cheap” lead to it becoming “celebrated and expensive”).

Remastered on heavyweight vinyl, Palm Palm stakes out the field of IDM- and ambient-adjacent electronic music where Innate Editions will be operating. Drums that shade toward broken beats but never quite get there add a feeling of deep longing and introspection to the title track, which Mark Broom and Dave Hill remix with stomping percussion. There’s an effect which was very common then but fairly obscure now that sounds like “digital smearing” — the sound of computers crashing their 8 megabytes of RAM or machines being played on dying batteries and wailing out their last gasps. It’s a kind of audio equivalent to the retro graphics that are popular in the scene now but hasn’t yet been revived in any meaningful way. That probably won’t last long and the spellbinding effect on remixes like this one show how effective it is.

The B-Side tracks are where the magic happens. “Function” and “Returned” are just sublime. A huge debut from a new label, set to spearhead a revival.
