Larum, the duo of Micah Frank (founder of Puremagnetik) and woodwind specialist Chet Doxas, continues its exploration of medieval composer Hildegard von Bingen’s musical principles with two new tracks from their forthcoming EP, The Music of Hildegard von Bingen, Part Two.
On “O Virga Mediatrix,” Larum collaborates with renowned guitarist Bill Orcutt, known for his distinctive work with Harry Pussy. Orcutt’s raw and expressive guitar playing blends seamlessly with Frank’s immersive electronic textures and Doxas’ gentle woodwind phrases. The track combines musique concrète, dub influences, and free jazz improvisation, creating a compelling, contemporary interpretation rooted in medieval musical structures.
The second track, “O orzchis ecclesia,” features South Korean cellist and improviser Okkyung Lee. Her sustained cello lines interplay effectively with Larum’s ambient and exploratory style, highlighting their ability to bridge ancient musical techniques and modern electronic production. Inspired by an antiphon from Hildegard von Bingen’s invented language (Lingua Ignota), the piece unfolds slowly, allowing Doxas and Lee to navigate the original melody with both respect and creativity.
Set for release on April 11, 2025, via Puremagnetik, these tracks illustrate Larum’s ongoing commitment to demonstrating the relevance of ancient musical practices through contemporary sonic experimentation.
