Leo Records Reissuing 68 Ivo Perelman Albums On Bandcamp Starting April 4 – Avant Music News

Legendary avant-garde jazz label Leo Records will begin reissuing the catalog of Brazilian saxophonist Ivo Perelman on Bandcamp beginning April 4, 2025.

Perelman, an improvising musician in constant forward motion, released 68 albums on Leo between 1997 (Sad Life, with William Parker and Rashied Ali) and 2019 (Efflorescence, a 4CD set of duos with pianist Matthew Shipp). These included duo encounters with drummers, collaborations with string quartets, recordings in a traditional jazz quartet format, and other combinations of instruments and partners. Many of these albums have been out of print or otherwise hard to find for years, but will now be available for purchase worldwide, in high-resolution digital audio.

Perelman told The Wire in 2022, “I enjoy the exchange involved in the creation of this music… I get the kicks out of the conversational aspects of unconscious creation with another human being or several other human beings. I practice so much, I enjoy practicing so much, I spend so many hours locked up playing long tones and scales and lines and this and that, that when it’s time to play, for me it means time to play with another human being.”

Perelman is indefatigably creative, releasing several albums of challenging, avant-garde jazz and improvisational music each year across multiple labels. But within his vast body of work, his relationship with Leo Records and its founder, Leo Feigin, was unique both in its duration — more than two decades — and the sheer volume of music created.

The reissue of Perelman’s Leo albums is part of a larger campaign to bring as much of the label’s storied catalog as possible back into circulation via Bandcamp, in partnership with author and music journalist Philip Freeman’s Burning Ambulance Music. Twenty titles will be released on the first Friday of each month in April, May and June 2025, with the final eight titles appearing in July.
