Blood Incantation released ‘Hidden History of the Human Race’ an album that combined the brutality of death metal and the math of metal in a pretty good fashion. Being harsh on the one side a multi-layered too created extra tension which benefited the album. Three years later the quartet from Denver, Colorado returns with ‘Timewave Zero’ and surprises.
The album isn’t delivering to what you expect when knowing the first two releases. Death metal, that isn’t present anymore and even metal disappeared. Instead, the four-piece fully focus on their passion for ambient rock.
‘Timewave Zero’, except for involved musicians, has nothing to do with the first two longplayer and most probably will be a disappointment for fans of the band. ‘Ea’ and ‘Io’ are the only two tracks on this record that is at minimum a distraction. Keyboard-laden ambient soundscapes are what the album delivers via the two songs, which are 20 minutes of length each.
There is not much more to say. ‘Timewave Zero’ is an unhittable musical curveball that distracts. It’s understandable that musicians would like to experiment with sounds and play with various genres. In this case it would have been helpful to unleash this experiment under another flag than Blood Incantation. Fans of ambient rock might find some positive aspects when it comes to this album, but the majority can invest their money into other releases with confidence.
