Machinefabriek – (Ver)pulver
It had been a while since I made a 7-inch. Melodrama was released in 2019, so it was about time for a new one. Here’s (Ver)pulver. Two short, raw and abstract pieces with a bit of a cinematic feel to ‘em. Hand-cut on lathe by the fine Champion Version label.
Rutger Zuydervelt – Microtopia (original game score)
The second game I scored, after Astroneer. Microtopia was developed by Floris Kaayk (with whom I worked before) and Tijmen Meijer, and has just been released. If you dig Astroneer you might actually like Microtopia too, as there’s quite a few similarities between the two automation games; it’s all about finding resources, building things, etc. This time though, the player controls an android ant colony.
European Soundtrack Award nomination
Last week came the nice surprise that my score for Margarida Cardoso’s beautiful film Banzo was nominated for an European Soundtrack Award, organized by the French No Limit Festival (dedicated to films and soundtracks). I’m nominated in the category ‘discovery’, for composers’ first feature film scores… which is weird, since I’ve scored two feature films before, but hey, it’s still an honour. The festival and award ceremony will be held in Strasbourg, starting March 21. The website is in French, but if that isn’t a problem, it’s below. (The text in the image above is a translation of the jury review)
New Frontlinie episode
For my Dutch-speaking audience… Another episode of Bram Vermeulen’s documentary series Frontlinie for VPRO. This time it’s about Kosovo: the NATO troops stationed there, and the discord with Serbia. As always it’s heavy stuff, but worth seeing (and hearing). Watch it on NPOstart
Two live gigs coming up
Both in March, and both Belgium flavoured collaborations
20 March, Predikherenkerk, Leuven (BE), with Youran
Excited to be a part of this project by Joachim Badenhorst again, after performing in Rotterdam during North Sea Round Town, in 2023 and 2024. This time it’s in Leuven, Belgium, in the Predikheren church. Besides Joachim and me, Tsubasa Hori (percussion), Simon Jermyn (bass and guitar), Alistair Payne (trumpet), and Nabou Claerhout (trombone) will be on stage. It’s gonna be magical! Info/tickets
30 March, LantarenVenster, Rotterdam (NL), with Donder
An afternoon concert with Belgium (avant) jazz trio Donder, with whom I in Ghent, early 2024. While the Youran gig is scored, this gig with Donder will be all improv. It’ll also be comfy, with the audience lying on bean bags or yoga mats, and the performers in the middle of the room. Sleeping is totally allowed. Info/tickets
Meander performances
Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Rotterdam (NL)
Meander, the circus/dance performance by Marta & Kim, Knot on Hands, and Felix Zech, can still be experienced in the Netherlands. Two performances coming soon in Amsterdam and Utrecht, and another one in May, at the Circusstad Festival in Rotterdam. Go see it if you can, it’s amazing! And if you dig the music, the soundtrack album is still available…
