Jimmy Carter and the Swamp Rabbit

A “Killer Rabbit” That Became Front Page News

President Jimmy Carter passed away last week at the age of 100, an age no president had ever reached before. He also had the longest post-presidency of anyone to hold the office—almost 44 years where he continued to serve people in ways that far outshined his time in office.

We focus more on the early presidents, but there is one quirky story about Carter’s presidency we covered in our previous episode “Photographic Presidents with Cara Finnegan” that we think is worth sharing. That’s the story of Jimmy Carter and the swamp rabbit—a silly story with real consequences.

You can listen to our replay of that topic here:

This is The Washington Post’s cover breaking the story of Jimmy Carter’s encounter where he “beat back the beast.”

And here’s a detail of the actual White House photograph showing the swamp rabbit.

For a more in-depth look at President Carter’s legacy, we recommend checking out the podcast Recollecting Carter.
