Helling 7 Amsterdam: who doesn’t know this place by now? A spacious terrace, a changing menu and the most thrilling view in Amsterdam North. Terrace lovers are genuinely in luck here. Not only do you get a view of the IJ river but also the still active shipbuilding shed. And that occasionally leads to spectacular scenes as impressive as the delicious food.
Atmosphere and interior at Helling 7 Amsterdam
A place like this would never be sleek and polished – it simply wouldn’t suit the surroundings. That’s why the owners of Helling 7 made sure the interior is just as industrial as the setting. That doesn’t mean the place lacks a warm atmosphere. It even feels a bit chic, thanks to the white table linen. The simple wooden chairs align more closely with the area. Much of the interior consists of salvaged items from the shipyard. And the name? That’s no coincidence either – the restaurant is built on a former slipway of the NDSM shipyard. And that brings the story full circle.
In the winter months, you feel right at home, thanks to the large windows. In summer, dining on the spacious terrace by the active shipyard is ideal. You’ll see cruise ships, icebreakers and other massive vessels come and go. You get the idea: there’s never a dull moment on the terrace at Helling 7.

Menu and dishes at Helling 7
The menu features dishes prepared intuitively over a fire. And no, it’s not just about meat. How about smoked pineapple, which confits in its skin during the process? Chances are you haven’t had that anywhere else, but at Helling 7, it’s part of the dessert menu.
Of course, meat, fish and fire are a match made in heaven. On the menu now: monkfish, ribeye and poussin, all prepared over an open fire. Perhaps the best experience is to share the sea bass with your group – it showcases what cooking over fire is all about. If you can’t decide, opt for the chef’s menu, which consists of four or five courses.
