Kikkie van de Prinsensluis Amsterdam is affectionately known as ‘Kikkies’ by locals and is just as beloved by visitors as it is by residents of our capital. And it’s no surprise: Kikkie has it all: a sun-drenched terrace, a relaxed vibe, a no-nonsense menu, friendly staff, and delicious dishes.
Atmosphere and interior at Kikkie Amsterdam
Step inside Kikkie van de Prinsensluis Amsterdam, and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a traditional brown café. The kind you often find in the Jordaan. But that’s just a first impression because Kikkies is relatively modern at a second glance. They jokingly refer to it as a ‘light brown’ café.
That light brown feel doesn’t come from the dark flooring and bar but rather from the light walls, which give the place a modern touch. And from the cosy atmosphere that lingers all day. You’re in the right spot for coffee with a newspaper, lunch, drinks, and dinner. An Ajax fan? You’re in luck, too, as matches are streamed here on Sundays.
Menu and dishes at Kikkie van de Prinsensluis
The menu is just as approachable as the vibe and interior at Kikkies. Think gastropub-style food—just good, without too much fuss. According to the owners, there was a real gap between fine dining and high-quality yet accessible food for everyone. British gastropubs partly inspired the menu, focusing on meat and fish. But the Jordaan roots of the place are still very much present: the chef smokes his pastrami in traditional Amsterdam smoke cabinets.
You’ll find a classic Smashburger on the menu (a trend burger lovers can’t get enough of), but also a quiche with scamorza, mussels with nduja sauce, and barbecued octopus. For dessert, skipping the cheesecake is almost criminal.
Looking for something a bit fancier? Just a few doors down, you’ll find Christiaan Smit, the ‘restaurant’ run by the same owners as Kikkie.
