Petit Heemelrijck Amsterdam // Your Little Black Book

French toast to go and a new restaurant? Heemelrijck restaurant is celebrating its 75th anniversary in style, treating fans to two exciting new additions. Owners Nars Hemelrijk and Benjamin van Roekel are opening not one but two establishments: Bakkerij Heemelrijck and Petit Heemelrijck Amsterdam, located in the heart of the city.

Ambience and interior at Petit Heemelrijck Amsterdam

On the corner of the Singel, right across from Café van Zuylen, you’ll find Petit Heemelrijck Amsterdam. It’s an intimate dining experience in traditional Dutch style. Step inside, and you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time (with lots of wood, Delft Blue and dark red accents), even when you see the menu.

Heemelrijck on Van Woustraat has been a hit for years, and it has been named after the restaurant in the Hemelrijk family for generations. Petit is a new, more modern spin-off with the same traditional touch. But mind you, despite the similar vibe, the OG Heemelrijck features more French influences than the latest addition.

Menu and dishes at Petit Heemelrijck Amsterdam

Starting with the bakery: they sell (award-winning!) French toast made from Frisian sugar bread. It comes in various types and sizes, including aged cheese and apple syrupmascarpone, lemon zest, or cinnamon whipped cream. You can imagine: it won’t be long before there’s a long queue here daily.

Petit Heemelrijck offers a slightly more extensive menu but stays true to the Dutch character of the restaurant. Think: toasties and pea soup for lunch, or, of course, a soft white roll with homemade meatballs.

As for snacks, they’re happy to fire up the deep fryer at this spot (another typical Dutch custom), where they lovingly prepare oyster mushroom and shrimp croquettes. You can also enjoy classic Dutch bitterballen and cheese soufflés here.

Dinner is equally Dutch: a variety of stamppot dishes (from endive to sauerkraut and a seasonal variation), accompanied by a stew recipe that dates back to the time when Grandpa Hemelrijk started the original restaurant.
