A disturbing video showing a captive elephant named Moina being brutally beaten by her two caretakers in India has sparked widespread public outrage. Police have arrested the two men.
The footage, which spread rapidly on social media, shows the elephant being repeatedly struck with sticks. One man is seen sitting on Moina while violently hitting her. At one point, the elephant collapses or lies down, and the man continues to strike her head with full force.
The incident happened in the village of Saulkhowa in Assam, where Moina was under the care of the two mahouts.
After the video emerged, animal welfare organizations quickly reported the abuse. Local police responded by arresting both individuals responsible.
The Assam Forest Department has taken Moina into protective custody, giving her proper care and attention.
The case has reignited concerns about the treatment of captive elephants in India. Despite existing legislation, such as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Wildlife Protection Act, enforcement remains weak. Reports of animal abuse continue to surface.
“Thankfully, Moina is now safe. The Nagaon Forest Department acted quickly and took her into custody. Veterinary checks are underway, and if her injuries are found to be serious (as suspected), strict legal action will follow,” Meet Ashar, legal advisor and director of cruelty response at PETA India, said.
Animal welfare organizations have condemned the incident and are calling for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws. They emphasize the need for better monitoring of mahouts and improved living conditions for captive elephants in India.
