George R.R. Martin Praises ‘GoT’ Prequel ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’

George R.R. Martin has pounded his stamp of approval upon the upcoming Game Of Thrones prequel series A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. The author teased the project in his personal blog, stating, “I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.”

“It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredible reasonable I am on that particular subject),” Martin continued. “Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you.”

The author’s words are high praise after he slammed changes made to House of the Dragon Season 2 last year. In a since-deleted blog post, Martin claimed a crucial character had been erased, creating a “butterfly effect” that would weaken the plot and cause bigger issues in the third and fourth seasons.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms chronicles a sequence of novellas set a century before the events of Game of Thrones. It follows two unlikely heroes who wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. In an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and images of the last dragon have not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

The series stars Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan); Dexter Sol Ansell (Aegon V Targaryen); Finn Bennett (Aerion Targaryen); Bertie Carvel (Baelor Targaryen); Tanzyn Crawford (Tanselle); Daniel Ings (Ser Lyonel Barotheon); and Sam Spruell (Maekar Targaryen).

Sarah Adina Smith (Lessons in Chemistry, Hanna, Buster’s Mal Heart) directs three of the six episodes, joining director and executive producer Owen Harris.

Written and executive produced by Martin and Ira Parker, the show is also executive produced by Ryan Condal, Vince Gerardis, Harris, and Sarah Bradshaw. Visual effects are being managed by visual effects supervisor Arron Roebuck.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms is set to hit HBO sometime this year.
