‘Jumbo’ Shatters ‘Frozen II’ Record In Indonesia, Becomes Highest-Grossing Animated Film In Country’s History

The Indonesian animated phenomenon Jumbo, directed and written by Ryan Adriandhy, has now overtaken Disney’s Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated film ever released in Indonesia.

Frozen II had held the record with 4.63 million admissions, but the locally-produced Jumbo surpassed that total today, its 19th day of release, and has now reached 4.97 million admissions.

The film’s breakout success could have a transformative effect on Indonesia’s rising animation industry. Considering that Indonesia is the world’s fourth-most-populous country (behind only China, India, and the United States), this is a significant development. As we reported earlier, no homegrown animated film in the country had ever even reached 700K admissions. Jumbo’s numbers are truly unprecedented.
