Out for a Ride by Lucas Drobnitzky

We came across Lucas Drobnitzky’s Out for a Ride on Instagram and it stopped us in our tracks with a screech and a lurch. Full of speed and color, his paper-cutout and car model “sketch” might leave you a little car sick—it moves!

“I came up with the concept as soon as I found the tiny Mini Cooper toy car in an old box at home,” Drobnitzky told us. “I had wanted to start exploring more dynamic animations for a while now, so a fast paced car pursuit felt perfect for the occasion.

“My initial idea was to keep the car within the pages of the notebook and have office supplies dart across the pages to give the illusion of speed. But I wanted to incorporate more movement, panning and zooming the camera in the actual shoot instead of adding the movements in post-production. So I decided to make the car leap and rip out of the notebook and on to the desk allowing me to introduce shots from different angles.”

Paired with some hyper-realistic car chase audio, the piece gets your heart pumping.

“I decided not to mount the camera on a tripod for the last shot following the car from behind,” he continued, “instead I held the camera in my left hand while I moved the car with my right. This added some shakiness to the sequence and infused it with more energy.

“In order to rig the car and keep it in place as it leaps into the air or almost flips as it turns, I used blue-tack and the incredible Riggs from Kinetic Armatures, which then have to be painstakingly removed on each frame in photoshop.”
