Belgian film production company Squarefish (‘Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds’, ‘Night Watch’ animation short)  is developing an animated feature film called ‘Rudy—The Prophecy of the Flying Boy.’ Adapted from the Belgian author Julien Lambert’s graphic novel, the film is directed by Vincent Kesteloot (‘Sammy 2,’ ‘Robinson Crusoe,’ and ‘Royal Corgis’, all box office hits).

The film’s script of 11-year-old Rudy facing an adventurous life in a mafia sci-fi world has already generated strong interest from co-producers and distributors at Cartoon Movie 2024 (presented in the Concept category). The film was also presented at the 2024 Annecy MIFA event.

The full synopsis:

Rudy is 11 years old. He is one of the “gutter cats,” abandoned children who have built their own “kingdom” — somewhere between a favela and a carnival. It’s a vibrant, colorful refuge, forbidden to the “graylings,” the last wandering adults of the city. But Rudy is not like the others. His unique sensitivity gives him visions of a natural world that disappeared long before he was born. This gift could change everything. Yet a looming danger arises: an extremist scientist shares his dream of a plant world’s rebirth — but at the cost of humanity’s extinction.

In this battle, Rudy won’t stand alone. He’ll have Jacques, a silent giant who can speak to objects, and Rose, a rebellious teenager ready to break free from a mafia family and theprincess image imposed on her. Will Rudy, this radiant child, shine brightly enough to light the way to a new future?

Supported by RTBF, Wallimage, and the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the project will be pitched at the Kaboom Animation Festival in Utrecht on March 26, 2025. Squarefish is currently seeking co-producers to join this ambitious adventure and bring the unique world of Rudy to life.
