Spanish sales agent Filmax has unveiled the first English-language trailer for The Treasure of Barracuda, an animated adventure feature that will sail into Spanish cinemas on September 26, with international release plans in the works.
The film, in Spanish but with a full English-language dub also available, is a step forward for independent kids and family animation in Spain, blending a distinct visual style, fan-favorite pirate thrills, and a heartwarming message about literacy, friendship, and challenging stereotypes that should make parents happy.
Directed by Spanish Academy Goya-winner Adrià García (Nocturna), The Treasure of Barracuda tells the story of Sparky, an 11-year-old girl who, disguised as a boy, finds herself aboard the Cruz del Sur, a pirate ship manned by a comically fearsome crew. Together with the cantankerous Captain Barracuda and the gentle giant John the Whale, Sparky becomes an unlikely hero in the search for the legendary treasure of Phineas Crane. Overcoming initial misgivings among the crew, Sparky’s earns her way as the only one on board who knows how to read, a skill that proves key to decoding cryptic clues leading to the treasure.
Produced by Spain’s Inicia Films and Hampa Animation Studio, alongside Belgium’s Belvision, and budgeted at €4 million, the 2D feature is adapted from the popular children’s novel El Tesoro de Barracuda.
Filmax, handling international sales and distribution, is positioning the film as a fresh family offering that channels the spirit of classic pirate tales while challenging traditional notions of gender roles and identity. Sparky’s journey from outsider to indispensable member of the crew promises both adventure and emotional resonance.
