Hello animators and artists! This is Toon Boom Animation’s March Streaming Calendar, where we highlight our upcoming livestream sessions.
This month we have two big events, a panel discussion and an improv storyboard art stream. We’ve invited panelists Brandon Berger, Élodie Robillard and Colm Dowling to discuss the ins-and-outs of rigging characters for action scenes. Meanwhile, Matt Watts (rigging and animator instructor) is joining Mike Morris on the Collaboratory art stream.
Need to rig props and background elements quickly? Harmony Premium 24 includes new shape-aware deformers that give artists new options for manipulating drawings and textures. Artists can download a 21-day trial from our website.
RERUN: Panel Discussion: Subtle Character Animation
Tuesday, March 11 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern
Chuck Jones famously described an animator as an actor with a pencil. In this Livestream discussion, we invited two industry professionals to discuss topics around subtle acting in modern 2D animation. The discussion covers topics such as what subtle character animation can convey, tips and techniques for improving acting and performances in animated characters, and your favorite examples of subtle character animation. Panelists include Eden Timm and Rebecca Kartzmark.

Panel Discussion: 2D Rigging for Action Scenes
Thursday, March 13 from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern
Would you be surprised to learn that action series can be animated using 2D rigs? Rigs allow animators to directly pose characters and, using vector lines, deformers, drawing substitutions and master controllers for techniques like applying foreshortening to limbs, these character rigs can move convincingly, even in perspective. We invited three panelists to discuss how they work with character rigs in Harmony Premium to bring action scenes to life. Topics include the benefits and challenges of using rigged characters for animation, how rigged characters can move believably through a scene, and where complexity in a rig can be more or less beneficial.
Panelists include Élodie Robillard, Brandon Berger and Colm Dowling.
