Lizzy & the Triggermen (2025)
For Memorial Day I wanted to share a song of hope written during a dark moment in history. The song “When That Man Is Dead and Gone” by Irving Berlin expresses feelings of relief and hope for a better future after the departure of a troublesome figure. Its themes of longing for change can be loosely connected to modern sentiments regarding political figures, reflecting a desire for new leadership and a shift in societal direction.
This forgotten Irving Berlin gem is a powerful protest song he wrote in 1941 as a protest against Hitler. This live version by Lizzy & the Triggermen was recorded at the legendary Joe’s Pub in NYC. It’s a song of hope – written during one of the darkest times in our world’s history, reminding us all that someday that evil man will be dead and gone.
The song “When That Man Is Dead and Gone” was written by Irving Berlin and originally performed by Al Bowlly and Jimmy Mesene in 1941.
