Canadian Theatrical News: The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Warner Bros. is releasing the an all-new Lord of the Rings animated film this month. Produced with the intention of retaining New Line and Warner’s rights to the franchise, The War of the Rohirrim was loosely inspired by the appendices of J.R. R. Tolkien’s novels, telling a new story. The film’s global rollout is this December.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was directed by Kenji Kamiyama at Sola Entertainment, with work by over 60 additional studios. The film’s script was written by Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Addis and Matthews conceived the story with Philippa Boyens, who served as one of the screenwriters for the Peter Jackson live-action Lord of the Rings movies. Gittins is her daughter. Stephen Gallagher, who was a music editor on The Hobbit live-action trilogy, composed the film’s score.

Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.
