Digimon Savers/Data Squad (Studiopolis) Episode 4: The New Team’s First Mission! Chase Drimogemon! | Sub/Dub Comparison

Plot: Tohma and Masaru have been ordered to be partners, and they’re getting along about as well as a lake of oil and a wildfire. Tohma insists on using strategies and data to fight opponents while Masaru is adamant on using his ‘punch first, ask questions later’ method. As they chase down a pair of bank robbers who have befriended a Drimogemon, the two continue to get in each other’s way. Can they manage to work together long enough to capture Drimogemon?

Title Change: “The New Team’s First Mission! Chase Drimogemon!” is changed to “The New Team of Marcus and Thomas!”…..Aren’t all three of them supposed to be a team? Does Yoshino just not count?

Also, minor note, but goddamn. It takes a full five minutes to get to the theme song and title card in the original in this episode? What the heck?

Agumon originally says Numemon like dark places. In the dub, he says “Wow, nothing gets by you does it, boss?” and I sincerely cannot tell if that’s sarcasm.

Yoshino says cleaning up after this will be tough. In the dub, she tells Marcus and Agumon to can the chatter and move in because they have a job to do.

The entrances Tohma refers to are B1 and B3. The dub omits this.

Tohma says the target is moving with a velocity of +2 and a movement rate of 0.6. In the dub, he just says the target is coming their way. To be honest, though, I don’t know what he’s babbling about in the dub. Those are some odd measurementss of speed.

Tohma tells Gaomon to move three meters to the left and await orders. In the dub, he tells him to take a forward position and await orders.

Minor, but Yoshino says to stop causing trouble. In the dub, she says they’d be lost without her. The dub makes her more stuck-up is all.

Masaru calls Tohma ‘Tonma’ again, and Tohma corrects him and asks if he can’t even get someone’s name right. In the dub, they don’t try to make any sort of English equivalent again and just have Marcus say he would listen to Thomas if he had anything worthwhile to say.

Masaru responds to Tohma’s comment by saying he definitely remembers his name, so he mocks him by saying Tohma’s full name just with ‘Tonma’ as the first name. In the dub, he says he can take on Thomas.

Masaru asks what’s for dinner, and his mom responds that they’re having curry. Marcus points out that Thomas is leaving, and his mother says it’s polite to offer (some tea) anyway.

The original guy breaking into that building doesn’t make a joke about how maybe the gadget that bypassed security can get him a date. Likewise, the other guy didn’t respond that the gadget doesn’t perform the impossible.

The sign on the top of the building originally said “Madaka Bank”. In the dub, this is painted to just say “Bank”.

The taller guy says this gadget cost him a fortune, but he’ll definitely be making up the losses soon. The shorter guy says they won’t just be making up losses, they’ll be filthy rich. In the dub, the taller guy says they’ll be rich soon, and the shorter guy says he doesn’t know what he’ll buy first – a car or a yacht.

The shorter guy says there’s no way the creature can understand what he’s saying. In the dub, he begs the taller guy for help.

Drimogemon originally just repeats a couple of the words the guys are saying. In the dub, he speaks completely normally.

The shorter guy asks why they brought the Digimon with them. In the dub, he asks if he can ride up front.

How can Yoshino tell any data was erased when the computer is showing nothing but a black screen?

Drimogemon is in route A-88. This isn’t included in the dub.

Drimogemon is moving at 60 kph. In the dub, she just says he’s moving quickly.

Drimogemon is heading to Districts D and E. In the dub, she says they’ve picked it up in Area A, and it’s now in Area B, and then it gets to C as she’s talking, so she kinda conveys the same information just in a different way.

Drimogemon originally stopped at District D-06. In the dub, it’s Area E Sector 2.

The text on the top part of the ATM sign is removed.

Masaru says Drimogemon is getting bigger. Marcus says he’s digivolving. I can get the confusion, but he’s not digivolving.

Attack Name Change: Baby Burner is changed to Spitfire Blast. I don’t mind this change because Baby Burner sounds very, very awful.

Tohma says Drimogemon will likely go to Point 08 in District E. This is omitted from the dub.

After Gaomon evolves, Tohma gets on him and tells him to go to Point 08 District E and get there in three minutes. In the dub, this is changed to Area F and he just tells him to double time it. I have no clue why they’re changing the locations to only slightly different location names.

The blockades that were lifted were originally for Districts D-06 and D-08. In the dub, it’s Areas E and F.

The dub omits the mention that Yoshino’s been working since yesterday morning.

Yoshino says being on duty is rough, and Lalamon says she’s with her. In the dub, she says she’s not complaining about getting some downtime, and Lalamon says it sounds like that’s exactly what she’s doing.

The text on Yoshino’s kitty book is removed.

I really don’t understand how Tohma got in there. We saw the door the entire time it was open. There’s no way he snuck in unless he can become invisible.

——————————————–

This episode was a bit of a welcome surprise because it ended with the conflict hanging in the air. Masaru and Tohma are more at odds than ever before, and Drimogemon got away. (Though, they did capture the bank robbers.) Granted, I didn’t expect them to become best buds or anything after one episode, but you usually see a bit more movement in that area in kids shows and they wisely chose to show them butting heads even more and leaving it open for more development in the future.

Granted, that doesn’t mean it’s exactly fun to watch these two bicker and act like idiots for 23 minutes. And, again, you really can’t help but side with Tohma most of the time. Masaru’s bull-headed way of doing things may work sometimes, but it’s foolish and dangerous, and the fact that Masaru continues to be unable to accept that is just frustrating. He’s almost worse than Goku in his thirst for a fight. He actively refuses smart options and strategies just because “URGH I WANNA PUNCH A DIGIMON!”

As someone who’s never watched Savers/Data Squad, I have to wonder if his storyline is heading in the way of him accidentally screwing up majorly due to his desire to fight and it hurts someone badly so he gets a reality check. I really don’t want them to keep feeding into this idea that his way is right just because…I dunno, fighting spirit or something.

I will relent on one choice he made, though. Tohma, it is obviously more intelligent to follow Drimogemon through his own tunnel than just guess where he’s going to go based on the angle in which he’s heading at the start. He can change directions, dude. He was right in his calculations, but that seemed more like fantasy calculations based on little data with a ton of luck thrown in.

The episode’s true cliffhanger is that Tohma snuck into the Digital Dive to head into the Digital World to retrieve Drigmogemon against Satsuma’s orders. The Digital Dive is apparently dangerous for humans to use, so we’ll see how that works out for him.

The dub this time around was perfectly fine story and character-wise. A lot of the changes were just pointless little details that they easily could have gotten correct but clearly chose not to, for some reason. I don’t get Studiopolis’ logic.

Next time, Masaru and Agumon go into the Digital World to chase down Tohma and hopefully take down Drimogemon.
