With the advent of the Thousand Year Blood War Arc, there’s, even more, to know about these timeless blades and pay tribute to them.
For today’s article, we will be delving into the Bleach anime and manga as well as the non-canon light novels ‘Can’t Fear Your Own World’ and ‘Spirits Are Forever With You’ – so beware of spoilers! Do keep in mind that this is our personal list and in no way are we dismissing any other Zanpakutos that are not ranked here. So without further ado, gather your Reiatsu as we rank the top 15 Zanpakutos in Bleach.
15. Sode no Shirayuki – Kuchiki Rukia
Wielded by Kuchiki Rukia, it has defeated formidable adversaries such as Arrancar Di Roy Rinker and Espada Aaroneiro Arrurueiri. But it is during the Blood War Arc that both Shinigami and Zanpakuto outshine themselves in a confrontation with As Nodt. The Sternritter has the ability to induce paralyzing fear in his opponents by conjuring their worst nightmares, but Rukia is unfazed.
In this epic clash, Bleach creator Tite Kubo reveals the true nature of Sode no Shirayuki, which is the power to lower Rukia’s body temperature to absolute zero, temporarily killing her and freezing everything that comes in contact with her. The infuriated As releases his Vollstandig, only to be destroyed by Rukia’s Bankai ‘Hakka no Togame’.
Living up to its reputation as the most beautiful Zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki’s Bankai is a sight to behold. Rukia transforms into an ice queen, bringing to mind the mythical Yuki Onna, an icy demon of Japanese lore. That said, this Bankai has a major flaw as the time Rukia needs to thaw from her semi-dead state leaves her susceptible to attacks.
14. Shinso – Gin Ichimaru
With the ability to extend a hundred times its original length and retract in a fraction of a second, Shinso is a bewildering weapon, as seen in the Fake Karakura Town Arc. While it is difficult to determine if it is the longest or the fastest blade, its power is undeniable as we witness an entire town being sliced in half.
Gin’s Bankai, ‘Kamishini no Yari’, which can be translated to ‘God-killing Spear’, cleverly foreshadows his attempted assassination of Aizen Sosuke later on in the series. Despite the unassuming appearance of both its Shikai and Bankai, Shinso has another dangerous ability.
As the blade retracts, it momentarily dissipates into fine particles, leaving behind a shard in whoever is unfortunate enough to be Gin’s opponent. The fragment contains a lethal poison, which when activated destroys the body at the cellular level. This ability raises Shinso’s level of peril to an unprecedented height.
12. Ashisogi Jizo – Kurotsuchi Mayuri
As a result of its master’s experiments, this visually striking weapon takes the form of a baby’s head that emits poisonous substances in its Shikai form. The Bankai, called ‘Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo’, sees the blade become a colossal golden baby with a caterpillar-like body.
Despite its captivating design, Mayuri’s Bankai has limited impact early on in the series, as seen during clashes with Ishida Uryu and Szayel Aporro Granz. But all that changes when Mayuri reveals a modified Bankai in his battle against Pernida Parnkgjas, the Left Arm of the Soul King.
As Pernida unleashes multiplying repulsive nerves, the 12th Squad captain and Soul Society’s resident mad scientist activates ‘Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo: Matai Fukuin Shotai’, which takes the form of a misshapen, purple-skinned giant baby, which in turn gives birth to another golden baby capable of countering Pernida’s nerve control by peeling its skin 70,000 times.
Sounds gross, but Ashisogi Jizo’s ability to counter diverse abilities is an ode to scientific advancement. Sadly though, its effectiveness against cunning and strategic opponents remains unknown.
12. Senbonzakura – Kuchiki Byakuya
Despite the shock of Byakuya’s initial loss to As Nodt, his Senbonzakura remains highly regarded. The cherry blossom parade made up of a million blades owns its position at No. 12, showcasing its brilliance in the latter half of the Blood War Arc. Fans of the regal 6th Squad captain might have found the scene of his bloody loss hard to digest.
But Byakuya has never been one to accept defeat. Refining his Shikai, Byakuya nullifies the Sternritter’s Vollstandig in their next encounter. This hints at a substantial growth in the power of his Bankai as well. Despite criticism of his role in the final arc from some fans, Byakuya defeats three Sternritters single-handedly and deals great damage to the formidable Gerard Valkyrie.
Using a different and highly effective version of his ‘Senkei’, he successfully detonates Gerard’s huge head. In spite of being one of the most exposed Zanpakutos in Bleach, Senbonzakura’s powers endure to this day.
11. Hyorinmaru – Hitsugaya Toshiro
Rivaling Senbonzakura in terms of popularity, we have Hyorinmaru, the most powerful ice-based Zanpakuto, at No. 11. This sword stands out first for its youthful owner, 10th Squad captain Hitsugaya Toshiro, and second for the minimal disparity between its Shikai and Bankai abilities.
Hyorinmaru has engaged in many crucial battles throughout the series, injuring numerous opponents with its icy dragons. One confrontation worthy of mention is the bruising clash with Espada Tia Harribel.
However, during the Thousand Year Blood War Arc, both sword and master experience their lowest lows as Toshiro has his Bankai, ‘Daiguren Hyorinmaru’, stolen by Sternritter Cang Du. Despite the humiliating loss, Toshiro valiantly confronts both Cang Du and Bazz B.
In the face of imminent defeat, he manages to regain his Bankai, only to engage in an excessively prolonged battle against the invincible Gerard Valkyrie alongside two other captains. In a testament to the Zanpakuto’s immense popularity, we later witness both Hyorinmaru and Toshiro reach maturity in what is undeniably a fan service move.
10. Benihime – Urahara Kisuke
With the once outlawed Urahara Kisuke emerging as a key leader for the Shinigami during the Quincy invasion, his Zanpakuto, Benihime, finally reveals its Bankai, sealing the 10th spot on this list. This is a momentous unveiling that commands our utmost respect and curiosity as it gives us more than a peek into one of the most elusive Zanpakutos in Bleach history.
In its Shikai state, Benihime – which means Crimson Princess – emits crimson energy, enabling Urahara to launch blasts and erect impenetrable shields. Its Bankai has always been a highly-anticipated event, given that Urahara, in his role as Ichigo’s mentor, has consistently shown strength in the most challenging situations.
Urahara’s Bankai, ‘Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame’, makes its debut in the battle against Sternritter Askin Nakk Le Vaar. Literally coming to life, the Crimson Princess envelops Urahara in her protective embrace. This Bankai has some unique powers. It can slice and restructure anything for offense and strategy and it also has healing abilities.
However, it has major weaknesses such as its limited range and the fact that the changes it makes revert when the Bankai is deactivated. These frailties somewhat reduce Benihime’s killing potential.
9. Kazeshini – Hisagi Shuhei
Much like its wielder, 9th Squad lieutenant Hisagi Shuhei, the Zanpakuto’s design exudes an undeniable coolness, which has for long left fans longing for the revelation of its Bankai. To their deep disappointment, it never happened in the manga. But in the novel ‘Can’t Fear Your Own World’, Hisagi’s Bankai, ‘Fushi no Kojo’, is portrayed in all its glory.
In its Shikai form, Kazeshini comprises two scythes connected by a chain. This design symbolizes the essence of a Shinigami, with the chain representing life and the blades being symbols of death. Fushi no Kojo is an enhanced form of the Shikai. It manifests as a massive orb suspended above Hisagi’s head, with a hangman’s noose formed by the chain, linking both his and his opponent’s necks.
As the two opponents injure each other, the chain utilizes their combined Reiatsu to heal them equally. This cycle of hurting and healing continues until both parties are completely drained. The purpose of this Bankai is difficult to grasp. What is clear is that it has a significant flaw – Hisagi needs an ally to deliver the finishing blow to the weakened opponent or must ultimately die himself.
8. Sakanade – Hirako Shinji
Despite the striking resemblance to Aizen’s Kyoka Suigetsu, Sakanade often comes across as an underestimated weapon, and we can largely blame Shinji’s constant blabbering about its technique for this. But this Zanpakuto possesses one of the most inventive abilities we’ve seen so far, which is the power to materialize an inverted world.
With just a spin, it envelops its surroundings in a mist and traps those who breathe in its fragrance with an optical trick. This illusion not only distorts the opponent’s sense of direction but also reverses their vision, attack directions, and injury locations. Shinji’s Bankai, ‘Sakashima Yokoshima Happōfusagari’, is a double-edged sword.
Its wide-range attack abilities make it invaluable in group battles and form a protective shield around its user. On the flip side, the condition for its release is that there must be more than one opponent, making it ineffective in a one-on-one fight. What’s more, it indiscriminately cuts down enemies and allies alike, which is probably why it is banned in Soul Society.
7. Nozarashi – Kenpachi Zaraki
Next up is Zaraki Kenpachi’s Nozarashi, which for most of the series was famous for not having a Shikai or a Bankai despite its powerhouse owner. Till the Blood War Arc, that is. This arc is a turning point for Zaraki as he attains the true title of Kenpachi after a death match with Unohana Retsu, hears the voice of his Zanpakuto for the very first time, and finally unlocks his full potential.
Expectations for an epic Bankai reveal would probably have reached a fever pitch when Zaraki sliced a falling meteor in half with his Shikai. When the reveal finally came in his battle against Gerard Valkyrie, it didn’t disappoint. Nozarashi’s Bankai remains nameless and transforms not the sword but Zaraki himself into a demonic form.
With one ferocious bite, he tears apart Gerard’s colossal arm, displaying his overwhelming power. It’s hard to compare Zaraki’s Bankai to any other. What we can say for sure is that the sword perfectly complements its owner’s character.
6. Zangetsu – Kurosaki Ichigo
Ichigo’s Zanpakuto, and especially his Bankai ‘Tensa Zangetsu’, are easily among the most overused in Bleach, and yet they never get old or boring. Constantly evolving with its master, Zangetsu is irreparably broken during the Blood War Arc but undergoes a magnificent and quite unexpected transformation after it is reforged by swordmaster Oetsu Nimaiya.
In the place of the old Zangetsu, Nimaiya presents Ichigo with dual blades, one long and one short. Combining the two creates a powerful new Bankai. The merging blades symbolize Ichigo embracing his mixed lineage as a Shinigami, Quincy, and Hollow. A new Getsuga Tenshou with flashy gold and black waves is the standout feature of Ichigo’s upgraded Zangetsu.
But there is also a notable increase in power, as we see when Ichigo confronts Yhwach. The blade shatters once again but still manages to cut the overpowered enemy leader in half. The transformation isn’t over as the shattered Bankai takes the form of Ichigo’s first-ever Shikai, which seems to signify a journey that comes full circle.
5. Katen Kyokotsu – Kyoraku Shunsui
While fighting Primera Espada Coyote Starrk, Kyoraku showed us his Shikai, which revolves around the theme of children’s games. While the games appear harmless and fun on the surface, they hide deep and dark aspects of the outwardly whimsical Kyoraku’s personality.
This characteristic carries over to his Bankai, ‘Karamatsu Shinju’, as well. Lille Barro, one of the most dangerous among the Quincy, finds himself thrown into the darkest depths of this Bankai, which unfolds like a Japanese theatrical play. It comprises four acts, each surpassing the previous one in lethality.
Drawing a parallel to the shared injuries inflicted by Kazeshini’s Bankai, Karamatsu Shinju does the same, as well as inflicting its adversary with an incurable disease, then suffocation, and ultimately decapitation. While the play might come across as a tale of murder, it is in fact following the narrative of a lovers’ suicide.
4. Urozakuro – Azashiro Soya
At the fourth spot is Urozakuro, wielded by Azashiro Soya, the eighth Kenpachi. Urozakuro is the name of Azashiro’s Bankai release while the name of his Zanpakuto remains a mystery. This Bankai has a bloody origin story. The massacre of Azashiro’s family by Hollows served as the catalyst for its activation and resulted in a horrifying bloodbath.
Remarkably, Urozakuro remained continuously activated throughout Azashiro’s life, even as he rose to the rank of Gotei 13 captain and became embroiled in a conspiracy to eradicate all Hollow life. The Bankai’s ability to merge with its surroundings and control them is an exceptional power. But the nameless Zanpakuto boasts an equally formidable Shikai.
In this state, the blade disconnects from its surroundings and consolidates Reishi into a single sword that rivals the execution blade Sokyoku. After willingly giving up his position instead of being defeated, Azashiro is confined in Muken and is still revered as a legend.
3. Kyoka Suigetsu – Aizen Sosuke
The third most formidable Zanpakuto in history, Aizen Sosuke’s Kyoka Suigetsu is the ultimate illusion-based weapon. This blade is the embodiment of Aizen’s evil and scheming nature. Its ability, ‘Complete Hypnosis’, has no parallel, having managed to hold all of Soul Society under its hypnotic sway for centuries.
To activate the hypnosis, the victim must witness the precise moment of Kyoka Suigetsu’s release. Even after the Zanpakuto was disintegrated by the Hogyoku, its illusory powers chillingly remain deep within Aizen. This is evident when Aizen manages to deceive Yhwach by warping his perception of time and even tricking him into thinking that he has killed Ichigo.
This is quite a feat given that the Quincy leader’s power of The Almighty lets him perceive the future and control it. While Kyoka Suigetsu’s Bankai remains wrapped in mystery, its overwhelming Shikai indicates that it would likely be beyond our collective imagination.
2. Ryujin Jakka – Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto
In a close contest between the top two contenders, Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto’s Ryujin Jakka takes the runners-up spot. The late Captain Commander’s final stand in the concluding arc is one of the most memorable moments in the series and the menacing presence of his ancient fire Zanpakuto has a lot to do with it.
Yamamoto’s Bankai, ‘Zanka no Tachi’, is made up of four techniques that are named after the four cardinal directions. ‘Zanka no Tachi East’ concentrates all the flames of Yamamoto’s scorched sword into its tip, making it capable of wiping out vast areas with a single strike. ‘Zanka no Tachi West’ engulfs Yamamoto in fiery armor, offering him formidable defense.
‘Zanka no Tachi South’ has the ability to resurrect the dead, creating an unsettling scene from hell. Lastly, ‘Zanka no Tachi North’ delivers a blinding atomic flash that destroys nearly half of Yhwach’s body.
The revelation that Yamamoto’s final opponent is actually Royd Lloyd impersonating Yhwach and not the Quincy leader himself greatly undermines the glory of this epic final battle, but not enough to take the shine off Ryujin Jakka.
1. Ichimonji – Ichibe Hyosube
Ichibe reigns supreme in the Zero Division. His power grants him control over all names, allowing him to bestow them or strip them away and effectively render a person or object’s existence meaningless. This power has earned him the title of ‘The Monk Who Calls The Real Name’. Ichimonji resembles a large calligraphy brush that cleaves names instead of flesh in half.
In its Shikai form, the brush is replaced by a blade releasing black ink, granting Ichibe control over the color black in all living and inanimate beings. During the battle against Yhwach, Ichimonji splashes ink on his opponent, stealing his Quincy name and powers. Its Bankai, ‘Shirafude Ichimonji’, uses white ink and has the ability to carve or rename individuals.
This is demonstrated when Ichibe renames Yhwach as ‘black ant’, effectively stripping him of his worth. Intriguingly, Ichibe releases his Bankai with the command ‘Shinuchi’. This is because Ichimonji was the first Zanpakuto to achieve its evolved form, which happened long before the term Bankai was coined.
