The Zenless Zone Zero brand activation, designed for 2,000 daily guests, attracted an average of 4,223 attendees, exceeding expectations. The event, aimed at 38,010 attendees, featured photo ops, retro TV stacks, and an immersive industrial aesthetic. Storyland Studios and production team Done + Dusted collaborated with video game publisher HoYoverse to create an out-of-world experience inspired by the game. The activation, set to open during the 2024 eSports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aimed to invite gamers, families, and influencers to enjoy special events, compete in gaming tournaments, win prizes, and immerse themselves in the game’s early-90s-inspired aesthetic.
Setting
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic futuristic world called New Eridu, where large pocket dimensions called Hollows engulf the land and spawn hostile monsters called Ethereals. After the fall of Eridu, a group of survivors established a bastion against the invaders by extracting a substance called Ether from the Hollows. The game features various factions, including the Cunning Hares, Belobog Heavy Industries, Victoria Housing Co, Hollow Special Operations Section 6, the Criminal Investigation Special Response Team, the Sons of Calydon, and the Stars of Lyra.
The story follows Wise and Belle, two siblings who are proxies and secretly the legendary Phaethon, using the Hollow Deep Dive System to remotely monitor and navigate Agents within Hollows. Zenless Zone Zero adopts a retro and analog aesthetic, with characters operating flip-phones or mobile phones from the 2000s and 2010s, and a video store called Random Play. The game also features references to 1990s media and grunge or street-style designs.
ZZZ first Popup Event:
Zenless Zone Zero, the latest HoYoverse game, is launching a Hollow Sighting in New York pop-up event on July 12 and 13. Visitors will be transported into a real-life Hollow, where they will encounter H.I.A. Investigators, Proxies, and Bangaboos. The event follows the gacha game, which launched earlier this month. Guests will pass through a quarantine zone and undergo orientation before taking on the role of a new H.I.A. Investigator. They will collect powerful Ether Energy from large Ether Crystals in the Hollow. Scanning codes will prompt them to complete an on-screen Ether Collection mini-game, which can be exchanged for a physical Ether Crystal. The event will also feature photo-op moments with ZZZ characters, demon stations, and in-game currency redemption codes.
