Tales from the Uganda Cancer Institute – Somatosphere

Podcast with Marissa Mika, writer and editor, in conversation with Thandeka Cochrane, Postdoctoral Research Associate, King’s College, London.

In this episode we travel to Uganda to hear the riveting story of the Uganda Cancer Institute. Following the publication of her long-anticipated book, Africanizing Oncology, we talk to Marissa about the tumultuous, long and vibrant history of one of Africa’s most important Cancer Institute. Marissa shares with us the struggles of doing doctoral fieldwork as a young doctoral student and then turning that fieldwork into a book. She shares with us wonderful anecdotes from the life at the Institute and gives us a rich insight into its complex history, from the late colonial period to the present day. A vocal advocate for the elevation of African voices, Marissa also discusses the importance of centring non-white actors in research and research outcomes and gives advice on how to go about writing an academic book.

This podcast is part of a series edited by Thandeka Cochrane, Fabien Provost, and Shagufta Bhangu, and produced by Rory O’Connor, https://linktr.ee/roryoconnor_music.
