Dr. Richard Schuster: A Scholar, Explorer, and Collector
Dr. Richard Schuster’s career began with an exceptional academic foundation. After earning his PhD in Experimental Psychology from Harvard University, Dr. Schuster made an unexpected choice in 1971—turning down a prestigious offer from Yale University to teach at the University of Zambia. He had already developed a deep interest in wildlife and African culture, and Zambia provided the perfect environment to explore both.
It was there, working with the World Wildlife Fund, that he became the leading authority on the lechwe antelope, conducting pioneering studies on the species. But his curiosity didn’t stop at the natural world. Over the six years he spent in Zambia, Dr. Schuster ventured across the African continent, immersing himself in its rich and diverse cultures. He began to collect tribal artifacts—each one more than just a piece of art, but a window into the history, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of Africa’s many peoples.
A Lifelong Appreciation for African Art
After retiring from his academic career at the University of Haifa in Israel, Dr. Schuster turned his attention to African art, a field that had long fascinated him. His travels led him to explore the artistic traditions of the continent more deeply, and over the years, he built a collection that reflected his personal admiration for its craftsmanship and cultural significance.
Rather than assembling a collection solely for prestige, Dr. Schuster approached his acquisitions with curiosity and respect, selecting pieces that resonated with him both aesthetically and intellectually. His collection found homes in respected institutions, including:
Bedford Stuyvesant Museum of African Art, Brooklyn, New York
Medgar Evers College, City University of New York
The Africana Institute, Newark, New Jersey
