Last week, I took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather we have been having this fall to plant my spring bulbs in our blueberry garden area. It was such a treat to work in the garden this late in the season, and I can’t wait to see what pops up in the spring. You will find links to each spring bulb I planted at the bottom of the post in case you want to plant some flower bulbs to enjoy next spring—it’s not too late!

Our blueberry bush garden area was one of the first gardening projects I tackled when we moved in three years ago. I shared the process HERE, and you can see the step-by-step process of how this area took shape. It was overgrown with weeds and a few small trees that needed to be removed for this new layout to take shape. We added the obelisks this past spring, and I knew they would create the perfect backdrop to plant spring bulbs around.
I did a test run with tulip bulbs in a tiny garden bed in front of our barn the previous spring, so I couldn’t wait to plant more this year.
I started by digging out a square around each obelisk that was 6″ deep. I made my square wide enough to accommodate three rows of flower bulbs.
I placed 2 allium bulbs, centered in between the legs of the obelisk, and then staggered two rows of white tulip bulbs in front of the allium.
I continued with this placement around each of the four sides of the obelisk.
I finished off my bulb planting with a row of grape hyacinths on the outer edge, planting shortest to tallest with my spring bulbs to create a layered look once they have all bloomed.
I can’t wait to see how everything blooms in the spring. Of course, holding on loosely to the fact that squirrels or chipmunks could ruin my best-laid plans. With anything in gardening, I always tell myself the first round or two is just a practice round to see what works, and that tends to help take the pressure off of feeling like I have to get it right the first time.
