Uptown for the Holidays is Athens’ night filled with holiday fun on December 5th, 2025 from 6-8pm. More than just tree-lighting, the event features activities for the whole family—and that includes Bobcats who are looking to get out of their off-campus student rental for the night.

The Athens Chamber of Commerce hosts classes and events during Uptown for the Holidays that are perfect for any age. Get a mug full of delicious hot chocolate and take part in ornament decorating and crafting classes nearby at various locations. What better way to de-stress from the past semester than taking things slow with a few friends and flexing your creative muscles?
Watch Classic Holiday Shorts at the Athena Cinema
The holiday movies and shorts of old are an American pastime around the holidays. The cartoon version of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer? The stop motion goodness of the classic Rudolph movies? They all stir up that warm, fuzzy, nostalgic feeling from viewing them the first time as children. And sure, you could watch all of those and more at home in your Ohio University college rental, but there’s something about the full experience. Pop over to the Athena Cinema for special showings of holiday short films that are sure to put you in the mood.
Don’t Forget the Tree Lighting
The community tree that stands just outside the courthouse is one of the best parts of the event. With freshly-made ornaments, the residents of Athens are invited to come out and decorate the tall evergreen with an abundance of ornaments and lights. Once it’s all lit up, the tree makes for a winter-themed photo op for you and your friends.
