College and university students in Canada can now get ChatGPT Plus for free, thanks to a new limited-time offer from OpenAI. This subscription tier normally costs $27.99 CAD per month, so this offer is worth $56 plus tax, which is a great offer for students leading into summer and during final exam season.
“Chatgpt plus is free for college students in the US and canada through may!”, announced OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday.
The deal is also available to students in the U.S. and runs from March 31 to May 31, 2025. Students who verify their enrollment status can access the upgraded version of ChatGPT at no cost for two months.
To qualify, you must be enrolled at a degree-granting school in Canada or the U.S., either full-time or part-time. Your student status will be confirmed through SheerID, a third-party verification service. If SheerID can’t verify you instantly, you might be asked to upload a document like a student ID or transcript.
Students must be physically located in Canada or the U.S. to access the offer. VPNs generally won’t work, unless you’re on a recognized educational network (nice try guys).
If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, you can still get this offer. Once your student status is verified, your account will be credited with two free months. The offer doesn’t apply to ChatGPT Pro or mobile app subscriptions through Apple or Google. To get the free months, you’ll need to cancel your mobile subscription and re-subscribe through a web browser.
This offer is part of a test program and may not be extended. OpenAI also says it could end the promo at any time if it detects fraud or misuse.
One of the advantages of ChatGPT Plus is the latest image generator. But that recently was made available for free ChatGPT users, despite limited access. For students, there are limitless ideas on how to use ChatGPT Plus. You can upload your notes and get ChatGPT to create a mock exam for you. Or, you could even talk to ChatGPT with its Advanced Voice mode and ask it to quiz you. Take a picture of a math problem and ChatGPT can explain it to you like you’re 12 years old. The ideas go on and on.
